Introduction
The rear drip gutter rails on the Land Rover Discovery 2 are one of the first exterior areas to show their age. UV exposure causes the plastic to fade, crack, and shrink away from the roofline, allowing water to track down the rear pillars and into the boot. Left unaddressed, this leads to rust and interior water ingress. Replacement is straightforward and makes a dramatic difference to the appearance and integrity of the vehicle.
Common Symptoms
- Cracked, faded, or shrunk drip rail plastic
- Water running down the C or D pillars after rain
- Musty smell or damp carpet in the boot area
- Rust staining at the base of the rear pillars
- Visible gaps between the drip rail and roof panel
Parts You May Need
- Discovery 2 Rear Drip Gutter Rails — direct replacement for the main rail sections along the roofline
- Discovery 2 Drip Rail Corner Trim (Pair) — the end-cap corners that are often the first to crack
- Land Rover Discovery Full Rain Gutter Trim Bundle — if you’re doing a full refresh, this bundle covers all sections in one hit

Tools You'll Need
- Trim removal pry tool / plastic trim tool
- Flathead screwdriver (wrapped in tape to avoid scratching)
- Clean cloth or masking tape (to protect the roof panel)
- Mild adhesive remover or IPA (if old sealant needs removal)
- Optional: butyl sealant tape for a weatherproof seal on reinstallation
Step-by-Step: Removing the Old Drip Gutter Rails
- Open the tailgate. This gives you access to the rear corner sections and makes the D-pillar area easier to work on.
- Start at the corner trims. The end-cap corner pieces typically unclip first. Insert your trim tool at the seam and gently lever outward. Work slowly — aged plastic can be brittle.
- Unclip the main rail. The drip rail is held by a series of plastic clips along its length. Work from one end to the other, releasing each clip in turn. Do not try to pull the whole rail off at once.
- Remove the rail. Once all clips are released, the rail will pull away from the roof channel. Note how it sits in the channel for reference during reinstallation.
- Clean the channel. Remove any old sealant, debris, or rust from the roof channel before fitting the new rail. A mild IPA wipe-down works well.
Step-by-Step: Fitting the New Drip Gutter Rail
- Optional: apply butyl tape. For added weather resistance, apply a thin strip of butyl sealant tape along the base of the channel before fitting the new rail.
- Locate the rail in the channel. Start at one end and align the rail in the roof channel, making sure it sits flush against the roof panel.
- Press the clips into place. Working from one end to the other, press each clip into its socket until you hear/feel it snap home.
- Fit the corner trim pieces. Press the end caps into position last — they should clip over the ends of the main rail and into the pillar trim.
- Check the seal. Run your finger along the top edge of the rail to confirm there are no gaps. A bead of clear silicone can fill any stubborn gaps if needed.
Fitment Notes
These rails fit all Land Rover Discovery 2 models (1998–2004) including TD5 and V8 variants. The drip rail design did not change significantly across the production run. If you’re working on a Discovery 1, contact us — the fitment is different and we can advise on the correct parts.
